Naranjo

Naranjo is an archaeological site of the ancient Maya in the Petén Department of northern Guatemala, with principal occupation and monuments from the Classic period (roughly 3rd-9th centuries AD).

The site’s important architectural elements include pyramid-temples, a central acropolis, a ballcourt, and a significant set of carved stelae and hieroglyphic monuments that record local rulership and events. Many stone monuments and stairways preserve inscriptions and reliefs that attract researchers and visitors interested in Classic Maya epigraphy.

Naranjo was constructed and occupied by Maya polities during the Classic era and played an active role in regional political dynamics; its monuments document episodes of rulership, alliance, and conflict. The site experienced building phases across several centuries and was eventually abandoned in the post-Classic period.

It is located in the lowland rainforest of the Petén region of northern Guatemala, among other Classic Maya centres, and is accessed through regional roads and forest tracks from nearby towns in Petén.
