Nara Park is a large public park in central Nara, Japan, established in 1880 and notable for its combination of historic temples, shrines and free-roaming sika deer. The park forms the cultural heart of Nara and contains several major heritage sites.
Key attractions within the park include the Great Buddha Hall of T?dai-ji, which houses a large bronze Buddha statue about 15 metres tall, the Shinto shrine Kasuga Taisha with its many lanterns, and the historic temple Kofuku-ji. Visitors also use the park as access to the Nara National Museum and a number of smaller temples and gardens.
The park’s deer are historically protected and largely tame; vendors sell crackers specifically for feeding the animals. Paths through the park connect the main cultural sites and make it walkable from Nara city center and nearby train stations.
The park sits in central Nara city, within Nara Prefecture, and is easily reached on foot from major local transport hubs in the city.
