Naqa
Archaeological Site Ancient Meroitic city with well-preserved temple ruins
Near Sudan’s Bayuda region, Naqa preserves Kushite temple ruins with carved reliefs and columns; archaeologists and visitors come to study its inscriptions and stonework.
Naqa is an ancient Meroitic archaeological site in north-central Sudan, notable for well-preserved sandstone temples and reliefs dating mainly to the early centuries of the Common Era.
The site’s principal highlights are two stone temples with decorated façades and sculptural reliefs. The Temple of Apedemak features distinctive lion-headed imagery and columnar sculptures while the Temple of Amun presents larger columned chambers and ornate doorframes; nearby funerary structures and small pyramids form part of the complex.
Naqa was built and used by the Kingdom of Kush during its Meroitic phase, roughly from the first centuries BC and AD, serving religious and ceremonial functions. Over time the site fell out of use and was later identified and excavated by archaeologists from the 19th and 20th centuries onward.
The site sits in River Nile State in the interior of Sudan within the eastern fringes of the Bayuda Desert, on the Nile’s Meroitic cultural landscape. It lies roughly north-northeast of Khartoum and is reached by road from regional towns; visitor facilities are limited.
- UNESCO context: Part of the Meroitic archaeological landscape and included with related sites on the Nile in UNESCO listings for Sudan's Meroitic heritage.
- Best light: Best photographed late afternoon when low light emphasizes carved reliefs and the sandstone coloration.

- Temple of Amun: A larger sandstone temple devoted to Amun featuring decorated doorways and columned halls built in the Meroitic period.
- Adjacent pyramids and settlement ruins: Remains of a settlement area and associated small pyramids and burial cemeteries that lie close to the temple complex and illustrate the site's funerary landscape.
