Nanda Devi National Park is a high-altitude protected area in Uttarakhand, India, centered on the mountain Nanda Devi (7,816 metres). The park and the adjoining Valley of Flowers together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site noted for alpine ecology and glaciated peaks.

Visitors are mainly drawn to high-mountain landscapes, glacier-fed valleys and endemic alpine flora, with controlled trekking in peripheral zones; the park’s inner sanctuary is closed to general tourism to protect fragile ecosystems. The landscape includes steep ridges, glaciers and alpine meadows at elevations that support specialized plant and animal communities.

The park was created to protect the unique high-altitude environment around Nanda Devi and has been managed to limit human impact, with strict access controls introduced in later decades. Conservation emphasis has included habitat protection for rare alpine species and monitoring of glacial environments.

Geographically the park sits in the Kumaon Himalaya of Uttarakhand, forming a ring of high peaks around an inner glacial basin; the nearest significant towns that serve as gateways include Joshimath and Munsiyari, depending on approach routes.

  • Peak height: Contains Nanda Devi, which reaches 7,816 metres and is the second-highest peak entirely within India, forming the park's core feature.
  • UNESCO & access: Part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the adjacent Valley of Flowers; access to the park's inner sanctuary is highly restricted and requires permits for scientific or limited trekking purposes.

What to See #

  • Nanda Devi peak: Dominated by the peak that rises to 7,816 metres, this summit is the park's central geological and glaciated feature.
  • Inner sanctuary: A glacially enclosed high-altitude basin surrounded by steep ridges; access to the inner zone is strictly limited for conservation and research.
  • Valley of Flowers: A nearby high-altitude valley famous for seasonal alpine meadows and endemic flowers; often visited by trekkers in the adjoining protected area network.
