How to Get to Nahariya
Nahariya is the northern terminus of Israel Railways' coastal line and is easily reached by train and intercity bus. For air travel, the main international gateway is Ben Gurion Airport (TLV); Haifa Airport (HFA) serves limited regional flights and private charters.
Ben Gurion Airport (TLV): The easiest international arrival point for Nahariya. From the airport you can take Israel Railways from the Ben Gurion Airport railway station direct along the coastal line to Nahariya; journey time is typically about 1 hour 45 minutes-2 hours 15 minutes and second-class tickets commonly range in the mid-30s-50s ILS. A taxi or private transfer to Nahariya takes roughly 1 hour 45 minutes-2 hours depending on traffic and costs roughly 450-600 ILS; rental cars are also available at the airport.
Haifa Airport (HFA): A small regional airport north of Haifa; international options are limited but it can be a useful arrival for domestic flights or private charters. From Haifa area you can combine a short taxi (about 30-45 minutes, ~200-350 ILS) or a local bus to Haifa train stations and then a train to Nahariya (train time from Haifa to Nahariya ~35-50 minutes, fares commonly in the low tens of ILS). Haifa-to-Nahariya by car is usually under an hour.
Train: Nahariya railway station is the northern terminus of Israel Railways’ coastal line. Regular intercity trains run between Nahariya, Haifa and Tel Aviv (some continue south); typical journey times are ~35-50 minutes to Haifa and ~1 hour 45 minutes-2 hours to central Tel Aviv. Fares depend on distance and class but expect second-class intercity tickets roughly in the tens of ILS (short hops to Haifa lower, full coastal runs higher).
Bus: Nahariya Central Bus Station is served by Egged and local operators with frequent services along the coast and into the Galilee. Buses connect Nahariya with nearby Akko (Acre), Haifa and long-distance routes to Tel Aviv and Jerusalem; travel times to Haifa are about 45-60 minutes by bus and to Tel Aviv about 1 hour 45 minutes-2 hours. Intercity bus fares are distance-based and generally range from low tens to around 40 ILS for longer routes.
How to Get Around Nahariya
Nahariya is easiest to navigate by train and bus for regional travel; Israel Railways gives the fastest connections to Haifa and Tel Aviv while Egged covers local and intercity routes. For short trips and sightseeing within town, walking works best; taxis or a rental car are useful for flexibility or travel to more remote sites.
- Israel Railways (train) (15-50 ILS) - Nahariya station is the line terminus on the coastal route; trains are typically the fastest, most reliable option for regional travel to Haifa and Tel Aviv. Trains run multiple times daily (more frequent during peak hours) and are comfortable for longer journeys. Buy tickets at stations, via the Israel Railways app or by card at machines; second-class is the practical choice for most visitors.
- Intercity & Local Buses (Egged) (6-40 ILS) - Egged operates the bulk of intercity services to and from Nahariya and local routes serving nearby towns. Buses are frequent on the coastal corridor and economical for shorter trips; they can be slower than trains in peak traffic. Use the Moovit or Egged apps for schedules and to buy or top up Rav-Kav (travel card) for best fares.
- Taxis (Short trips 15-60 ILS; intercity 150-600 ILS) - Metered taxis are widely available from the central bus station and around the city; they're convenient for late-night travel or trips that aren't well served by bus. Expect short in-town fares to be modest but intercity taxi rides (e.g., to Haifa or to the airport) to be considerably more expensive - agree a rough price or ensure the meter is running. Ride-hailing apps operate in Israel and can sometimes produce more predictable fares.
- Sherut (shared taxis) (40-120 ILS) - Sherut minibuses run on popular intercity routes (Tel Aviv-Nahariya and others) and are a good compromise between bus and private taxi. They often leave when full, run evenings when some bus services are reduced, and can be faster than buses. Fares are typically similar to or a bit higher than bus prices and payment is usually in cash to the driver.
- Car rental (200-400 ILS/day (varies by season and car type)) - Renting a car gives maximum flexibility for exploring the western Galilee and sites outside Nahariya; parking in the town centre is generally available but can be limited during peak summer weekends. Roads are well signposted and distances to major cities are reasonable, but driving and parking costs (plus fuel and occasional tolls) make it pricier than public transport. Check parking rules in town to avoid fines.
- Walking - Nahariya's centre is compact and pleasant to explore on foot - beaches, the promenade and the main shopping streets are all walkable. Walking is the best way to soak up the town atmosphere and reach nearby cafés and the seafront quickly. Public transport hubs are also within easy walking distance from most central accommodation.
