Nagarjunakonda

Nagarjunakonda is an important archaeological and Buddhist historical site in south-central India known for monastic complexes, stupas and sculptural art dating to the early centuries of the Common Era. The site’s name is associated with Buddhist activity and scholarship in the region.

Nagarjunakonda developed as a bishopric of Buddhist monasteries and was an active religious and educational centre in the early centuries CE. In the mid-20th century, large-scale reservoir construction in the region led to conservation and relocation efforts for many of the archaeological materials, which are now exhibited in the site museum.

The site lies on an island/mound in the Krishna valley region and is reached from nearby towns; it is part of the larger archaeological landscape associated with the Krishna river basin.
