Nabta Playa

Nabta Playa is a prehistoric archaeological complex in the Egyptian Western Desert, known for Neolithic stone alignments, burial sites and evidence of early pastoralist communities. The site preserves megalithic features and archaeological deposits that predate the rise of ancient Egyptian statehood.

Archaeologists have documented stone circles, aligned megaliths interpreted as calendrical or ritual constructions, and burial contexts containing pottery and animal remains. The assemblage indicates seasonal occupation and cattle herding by Neolithic pastoralists.

Research at Nabta Playa has placed parts of the site in the mid to late Holocene Neolithic period, making it an important location for understanding prehistoric lifeways in northeast Africa. The site is studied for its archaeology and its possible astronomical alignments.

Nabta Playa lies in the remote Western Desert of southern Egypt, far from major settlements; visiting the area requires organised desert logistics and appropriate permits.
