Myōkō-zan refers to Mount Myōkō, a prominent volcanic peak in Niigata Prefecture in northern Honshu, Japan, and an important local landmark for outdoor recreation. The mountain forms part of a volcanic range near the border with Nagano Prefecture.

Myōkō is a volcanic cone that has long been a feature of local geography and has supported settlement and mountain-recreation activities for many decades. The slopes have been developed for skiing and onsen tourism in the 20th and 21st centuries while the mountain itself remains a natural landmark.

The mountain sits in Niigata Prefecture near the prefectural border with Nagano, with nearby resort towns such as Myōkō-Kōgen serving as the usual bases for visitors.

  • Elevation and activities: Elevation around 2,454 metres makes the mountain a prominent regional landmark and a popular objective for summer hiking and winter skiing.
  • Access: Approach routes start from nearby resort areas and onsen towns that provide accommodation and lift access during ski season, so allow time for transfers from regional transport hubs.

What to See #

  • Summit: The summit rises to about 2,454 metres and is the highest point of the local volcanic massif, offering alpine views on clear days.
  • Trailheads and base areas: Base areas and nearby towns such as Myōkō-Kōgen provide trailheads, mountain huts and hot-spring (onsen) facilities used by hikers and winter sports visitors.
