Established in the 7th century, the temple has been rebuilt and refurbished several times over its history while retaining its role as a central religious institution. It is associated with important religious practices, including veneration of a historically significant, privately kept Buddha image.

Located in the city of Nagano in central Honshu, the temple sits close to the city center and is accessible by public transport from Nagano Station.

Zenkō-ji is in central Nagano city and is best reached from Nagano Station: it’s about 1.5 km (around a 15-25 minute walk) south of the station along the main shopping streets. Numerous local city buses stop at or near Zenkō-ji (look for buses with a Zenkō-ji or temple stop), and there is limited parking nearby if you drive.

• Arrive early (before the main tour groups) to experience the main hall and surrounding temple precinct in relative quiet and to join early morning services if you want an immersive visit.
• Buy admission to the main hall area-this ticket lets you access the Okaidan Meguri (the dark passage under the main hall) for a unique sensory experience that many casual visitors skip.
• Spend time on Nakamise-dori and the smaller side streets leading away from the temple entrance for local snacks, crafts, and quieter secondary halls that most tourists miss.
