Musée de l’Homme is France’s national anthropology museum housed in the Palais de Chaillot at the Trocadéro in Paris, near the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. The institution studies human evolution, societies, and cultural diversity and serves both as a museum and a research centre.

Permanent and temporary exhibitions present material culture, skeletal and archaeological material, and multimedia displays that explore human origins, biological variation, and cultural practices across the world. The museum originated in the 20th century as part of France’s national scientific museums and underwent a comprehensive renovation and reinterpretation of its displays, reopening its renewed galleries in 2015. It combines exhibition spaces with research and conservation facilities.

The Palais de Chaillot sits on the hill above the Trocadéro across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower, in Paris’s 16th arrondissement, offering views toward the Champ de Mars and central Paris.

The Musée de l’Homme is at the Palais de Chaillot by Place du Trocadéro. Take Paris Métro to Trocadéro station (lines 6 and 9); the museum is a 1-2 minute walk across the Place du Trocadéro via Avenue du Président Wilson. The site is also close to the Seine and the Trocadéro terraces.

By car it lies on the western edge of central Paris - about 3-4 km (roughly 2-2.5 miles) west of Île de la Cité/Notre-Dame; approach via Avenue du Président Wilson or Quai Branly. There is street access and nearby parking facilities but central Paris traffic can be heavy.

• Enter via the Palais de Chaillot on the Trocadéro esplanade (the museum sits in the Chaillot complex) and combine the visit with the Trocadéro terraces for one of the best direct views of the Eiffel Tower.
• Aim for a weekday morning when the Trocadéro gets fewer tourists and photographers; afternoons and weekends become crowded because of the viewpoint outside.
• Allow time to visit the permanent anthropology displays on the upper floors and to check the temporary exhibitions - the rooftop terraces and viewpoints are often overlooked but reward a short detour.
