Musawwarat es-Sufra is an archaeological complex in the Butana region of Sudan, noted for extensive Meroitic-period remains. It is one of the principal Meroitic sanctuary and settlement sites in northeastern Sudan.

The site contains a large, unusual walled complex known as the Great Enclosure with ramps and courtyards, multiple small temples and carved reliefs, and a network of artificial reservoirs and channels used for water management. These features make it an important location for understanding Meroitic ritual, architecture and landscape engineering.

Excavations and surveys have shown the site was active during the Meroitic period, roughly from the later first millennium BCE into the early centuries CE, serving religious and possibly economic functions within the kingdom of Meroe. Over time the complex fell into ruin and has been the subject of archaeological study and conservation.

Musawwarat lies on the Sudanese plains east of the Nile in River Nile State; it is accessible from regional towns and is one of several major Meroitic sites in the region that together form the wider archaeological landscape.

  • UNESCO status: Included as part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing "Archaeological Sites of the Island of Meroe", recognised for its Meroitic-period remains.
  • Period: The site preserves architecture and reliefs from the Meroitic kingdom, broadly dating from the mid 1st millennium BCE into the early centuries CE.

  • Temples and reliefs: Several small temples and sculptural reliefs featuring animals and ritual motifs that reflect Meroitic religious practice; one structure is commonly called the Lion Temple because of its carved representations.
  • Reservoirs and channels: Extensive water-management works including artificial reservoirs and channels that supported the complex in an arid plain.
