Muness Castle

Muness Castle is a late 16th-century ruin on the island of Unst in Shetland, Scotland, and is notable for its remote coastal setting and surviving masonry. It is recognised as the most northerly castle in the United Kingdom.

Visitors encounter the remains of an L-plan stone tower house and surrounding defensive features set on a low rocky promontory; the ruin is accessible on foot from nearby lanes and offers coastal views. The site is compact and primarily visited for its architecture and location rather than interpretive facilities.

Constructed in the late 1500s, the castle served as a fortified residence and fell into ruin in subsequent centuries. Its fabric and layout reflect the tower-house tradition used by island lairds during the period.
