Mullutu-Suurlaht is a coastal lagoon and shallow lake complex on Saaremaa island in western Estonia. It is the largest lagoon-type water body on Saaremaa and forms part of the island’s wetland and coastal system.
The lagoon system supports a range of waterfowl and wetland plants and is used locally for fishing and seasonal birdwatching. The shallow, low-lying nature of the water body means levels and salinity can vary with weather and sea influence.
Historically the waterbody formed where the Baltic and local drainage met in a low-lying coastal plain; human activity and seasonal sea influence have shaped its extent and ecology. It remains an important natural feature of Saare County’s coastal landscape.
Mullutu-Suurlaht lies on the western side of Saaremaa island, within Saare County, surrounded by low farmland and coastal reedbeds and reachable from nearby island villages.
