How to Get to Mtskheta#
Mtskheta is a short trip from Tbilisi and is normally visited as a day trip. The easiest approach is by taxi or by marshrutka from Tbilisi (Didube) or by suburban train from Tbilisi station.
Tbilisi International Airport (TBS): Tbilisi International Airport is the nearest major airport for Mtskheta (about 20-30 km). From the airport take a taxi to Mtskheta (roughly 20-40 minutes depending on traffic) or travel into Tbilisi and continue by marshrutka or train. Taxi fares from the airport to Mtskheta are usually modest (allow for GEL ~30-50 depending on negotiation and time of day).
Kutaisi / Batumi (seasonal): Other Georgian airports (Kutaisi, Batumi) are further away and require longer road transfers to reach Mtskheta.
Train: Mtskheta has a railway station on the Tbilisi-Zestafoni line with suburban trains from Tbilisi that take about 20-30 minutes. Trains are inexpensive and useful for reliable transfers between Tbilisi and Mtskheta.
Bus / Marshrutka: Marshrutkas depart from Tbilisi (Didube station area) to Mtskheta frequently; journey time is usually around 30-45 minutes and fares are very low (around 1-2 GEL). Buses and marshrutkas are the most common public option for day-trippers from Tbilisi.
How to Get Around Mtskheta#
Mtskheta is easiest as a short excursion from Tbilisi by marshrutka, suburban train or taxi. For visitors, marshrutkas are the budget option while taxis and guided tours are faster and more convenient.
- Marshrutka (minibus) from Didube (GEL 1-2) - Frequent minibuses leave Didube station in Tbilisi for Mtskheta; they are cheap, fast and run many times a day. Expect to stand at busy times and pay a small cash fare on boarding.
