Freedom Square is a central plaza in Tbilisi that functions as a political and ceremonial gathering place in the Georgian capital. A tall column surmounted by a statue of St. George is the square’s most visible element.

The square has undergone several name changes and redesigns in the 20th and 21st centuries, reflecting Georgia’s political transformations; the St. George monument marks the post-Soviet national identity of the site.

Freedom Square sits in central Tbilisi at the junction of major thoroughfares, adjacent to Rustaveli Avenue and within easy walking distance of museums, theatres and the historic city centre.

Freedom Square (Tavisuplebis Moedani) sits in central Tbilisi on Rustaveli Avenue. The easiest public-transit access is Rustaveli metro station on the Akhmeteli-Varketili (Line 1) - the square is a 3-5 minute walk from the station. Numerous city buses and minibuses run along Rustaveli Avenue to the square as well.

From Tbilisi International Airport the square is about a 17-20 km drive into the city centre (roughly 20-30 minutes by car depending on traffic); taxis and airport shuttles drop passengers in central Tbilisi within easy walking distance of the square.

• Visit early morning or after sunset for the best light and far fewer tourists and tour groups; midday and weekend afternoons see the highest footfall from city shoppers and organized groups.
• Use Rustaveli metro station or the pedestrian routes along Rustaveli Avenue to approach the square - those entrances put you immediately at the historic buildings and museum strip rather than the busier highway-side approaches.
