Mount Takao is a forested peak on the western edge of Tokyo known for its easy access from the city and its year-round recreational use. The mountain’s modest summit is a popular day-hike destination and a focal point for local mountain worship.

The site combines cultural visits to the mountain temple with short hikes, several well-marked trails, and uphill transport options that serve visitors of differing fitness levels. Viewing platforms and lookout points provide wide views over the surrounding hills and, in clear weather, distant cityscapes.

The mountain has long been established as a nearby natural escape for residents and visitors to Tokyo, with developed facilities at the base that support high visitor volumes on weekends and holidays.

Located in the western suburbs of Tokyo, the mountain is served by regular trains to the base station and is within the city prefecture’s transport network.

What to See#

• Yakuoin Temple: A historic Buddhist temple complex near the mountain summit that has long been a focal point for pilgrims and tourists.
• Cable car and chairlift: Two uphill transport systems that shorten the ascent for non-hikers and link the base area with mid-mountain viewpoints and trailheads.
• Summit observation deck: A compact viewing platform near the summit offering panoramic views of the surrounding forested hills and, on clear days, distant urban skyline.

From central Tokyo take the Keio Line direct to Takaosanguchi Station (express services from Shinjuku take around 50 minutes); the main trailheads and cable car/ropeway area are a 3-5 minute walk from Takaosanguchi Station.

You can also reach Mount Takao by JR Chuo Line to Takao Station and then transfer to local buses or the short onward walk to the trail network. Parking and road access are available for drivers coming from western Tokyo.

• Arrive via Keio Takaosanguchi Station and start on weekday mornings to beat the heavy weekend crowds; the station is the most convenient entrance and places you immediately at the base of the popular Trail 1 and the cable-car area.
• Skip the very busy Trail 1/cable-car route if you want quieter hiking - Trails 6 and other side routes offer a less-crowded ascent and still reach the main viewpoints and Yakuoin Temple.
• If you want views with fewer people, start early and consider descending by cable car from the mid-station so you avoid the late-afternoon crush on the uphill path.
