Mount Suswa
Area Shield volcano near Nairobi with extensive lava tubes
A shield volcano southwest of Nairobi, Mount Suswa features a double crater and lava-tube system explored on guided hikes; visitors combine caving with wildlife sightings and Maasai cultural visits.
Mount Suswa is a broad shield volcano in Kenya’s Great Rift Valley, located in Kajiado County. The summit reaches about 2,356 meters above sea level.
The mountain is notable for its double-crater structure and an extensive system of lava tubes and caves that run under the summit area. Hikes commonly follow the outer crater rim and access the lava-tube entrances; wildlife such as baboons and rock hyrax are frequently seen around the caves.
Suswa formed through Rift Valley volcanism and is composed largely of basaltic lava flows; local uses have included grazing and community conservancies that manage parts of the slopes. The lava-tube system and crater morphology are the mountain’s defining geological features.
The mountain sits on the floor of the East African Rift within Kajiado County, near the settlement of Suswa and surrounding semi-arid plains. The landscape around it is dominated by acacia woodland and open grassland.
- Best time and access: Several guided day hikes and overnight trips operate from nearby towns; sunrise from the crater rim is a commonly recommended viewing time.
- Wildlife: Wildlife includes troops of baboons and colonies of rock hyrax that use the lava tunnels, so keep distance and follow guides' advice.
What to See #
- Lava tubes / inner crater: A complex of lava tubes and caves running beneath the summit area; some passages are large enough to walk and are notable wildlife shelter for baboons and rock hyraxes.
- Outer crater and summit: The outer crater rim and summit area offering panoramic views across the Rift Valley; typical hiking route gains the summit ridge and traverses the crater rim.
Tips for Visiting Mount Suswa #
- Plan a very early morning visit from Nairobi (start before sunrise) to beat the heat and see wildlife around the double crater and slopes when animals are most active.
- Hire a local conservancy guide in Suswa - guided visits give safe access to the famous lava tubes and local cultural insights, and guides know which tunnel entrances are passable.
- Don't just stick to the roadside views: arrange a walk into the inner crater and less-used ridgelines through the Suswa Conservancy to see the mountain's geology and avoid the small crowds that stay near the main access tracks.
Best Time to Visit Mount Suswa #
Best visited in the drier months (June-September) when trails are easier and conditions are clearer.
