About Hell's Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate National Park is a compact protected area in the Rift Valley of Kenya known for its steep gorges, towering cliffs and geothermal activity. It is popular for day visits from Nairobi.

The landscape is characterized by narrow gorges, volcanic plugs and red-rock cliffs that are accessible for walking, rock climbing and cycling. Wildlife is present but the park is especially valued for its geological scenery and opportunities for close-up outdoor recreation.

The area has long-standing human use and was designated as a national park to protect its unique geology, wildlife corridors and cultural sites; management balances recreation, conservation and nearby geothermal developments.

Hell’s Gate sits in the Rift Valley north of Lake Naivasha and is within reach of central Kenya’s main transport routes, surrounded by agricultural land and volcanic plains.

Active access: Climbing, cycling and walking are permitted inside the park, making it one of the few Kenyan parks where visitors can get close to dramatic cliffs and gorges on foot or by bike.

How to Get to Hell's Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate is about 90 km northwest of Nairobi and 10 km south of Naivasha town. From Nairobi take the A104 toward Nakuru and turn off near Mai Mahiu toward Naivasha; the park is a short drive from Naivasha town. Local operators in Naivasha and Nairobi offer cycling and guided hiking packages.

Tips for Visiting Hell's Gate National Park

Rent a bicycle at the park entrance-cycling through the gorge and plains is one of the few Kenyan parks where close, quiet exploration is permitted.
Combine a visit with Hell's Gate's geothermal features: the Fischer's Tower and patterned cliffs make for dramatic climbing and photography.
Avoid peak midday heat for canyon hikes and take a licensed guide for rock-climbing routes.
