Mount Rungwe is a volcanic massif in Tanzania’s Mbeya Region and an important local highland landmark and biodiversity area. Its slopes support montane forest and distinct upland habitats that differ from the surrounding plains.

The mountain is popular with local hikers and naturalists because of accessible trails, endemic plants and the relatively cool climate at higher elevations. Conservation efforts have established protected forest areas on parts of the massif to safeguard habitat.

Geologically it is part of the Rungwe volcanic province in southern Tanzania, located southwest of the city of Mbeya and above the Great Rift Valley landscape of the region. Access is by road from regional towns.

  • Regional significance: The mountain is a regional high point within Mbeya Region and is visited for biodiversity, cooler upland climate and short trekking routes from nearby towns.

What to See #

  • Forest reserve: A protected montane forest reserve covers parts of the massif and supports montane and submontane habitats distinct from surrounding lowlands.
