Mount Rishiri is a volcanic cone that dominates Rishiri Island off the northwest coast of Hokkaido. The mountain is the island’s central feature and is visible from the surrounding sea, forming a distinctive conical profile.

Hiking the mountain is the primary reason people visit the island; the main route climbs steeply from near the harbour and requires a full day for ascent and descent on most itineraries. The summit offers wide coastal views and is often clear on calm weather days.

The peak is the remnant of volcanic activity and has long been a landmark for local navigation and island life. Trails and local facilities are concentrated around the island’s principal settlement and ferry terminal.

Rishiri Island lies off Hokkaido’s northwestern shore and is reached by scheduled ferries; the island village serves as the usual base for visitors.

• Oshidomari town: The island’s main harbour and service settlement where most visitors begin and end their island visit, with ferries connecting to mainland Hokkaido.

Rishiri (Rishiri-zan) is on Rishiri Island off the northwest coast of Hokkaido. Regular ferries operate between Wakkanai and Rishiri (seasonal schedules), arriving at Rishirifuji port; Heartland Ferry operates services on this route. From Rishirifuji port you can reach trailheads for Mount Rishiri by local bus (seasonal) or taxi - the ride from the port to common trailheads is typically about 10-20 minutes.

Alternately, visitors sometimes fly to the island’s small airport when flights operate; once on Rishiri Island the road network and local buses/taxis connect the port, airport and mountain trailheads.

• Take the earliest ferry or flight that serves Rishiri Island (most visitors arrive from Wakkanai) so you have a full, calm-day window for the climb - afternoon sea fog and wind commonly build up and can spoil summit visibility.
• Begin the ascent from the island's main trailhead soon after arrival; the climb is exposed and weather on the island changes quickly, so allow time to descend before evening winds pick up.
• Explore the coastal approach and local visitor information on the island before setting out - facilities and transport options are limited off the main port, so plan logistics (ferries/return) in advance.
