How to Get to Tomakomai
Tomakomai is best reached by flying into New Chitose (CTS) then taking JR rail or a highway bus into town. The city has a well‑connected JR station that provides reliable, comfortable links to Sapporo, Muroran and airport transfers.
New Chitose Airport (CTS): New Chitose (CTS) is the primary airport serving the Sapporo/Tokachi region and is the most common air arrival for Tomakomai. By JR rail the trip from New Chitose to Tomakomai Station takes around 40-55 minutes on local/rapid services; adult one‑way fares are typically in the JPY 1,000-1,300 range depending on the train.
Chitose / Sapporo (via CTS): If you fly into Sapporo (domestic or connecting), continue by JR from New Chitose or Sapporo to Tomakomai - trains are regular and well integrated with airport transfers.
Train: Tomakomai Station (苫小牧駅) is on the Hakodate Main Line and Muroran Main Line with frequent regional and rapid services to Sapporo, Muroran and southern Hokkaido. Travel times: Tomakomai-Sapporo ~50-70 minutes (JPY ~1,200-1,800 depending on service).
