Kitami sits in northeastern Hokkaido, known for its mint heritage, strong dairy and winter-sports culture, and proximity to the Sea of Okhotsk. It’s a gateway for cold-weather activities, rustic festivals, and hearty regional cuisine.

Getting around: Arrive at JR Kitami Station on the Sekihoku Main Line; local buses run, but renting a car is best for accessing rural attractions and winter routes.

Infrastructure & convenience: Compact city center around Kitami Station offers supermarkets, hospitals and seasonal tourist centers; expect fewer late-night shops and reliable but spotty English support.

Local tips: Bring heavy layers and crampons in winter; many locals drive with studded tires. Visit the Mint Memorial Museum and sample local dairy products.

Dining: Eat hearty Hokkaido fare: jingisukan mutton grills, thick miso ramen, fresh Sea of Okhotsk seafood and creamy dairy soft‑serve at downtown Kitami cafés.

Kitami historically produced the majority of Japan's spearmint (mint) oil, earning it the nickname 'mint capital'.

How to Get to Kitami#

Kitami is in northeastern Hokkaido and is reached most conveniently via Memanbetsu Airport (MMB) or by rail at JR Kitami Station. Domestic flights to Memanbetsu plus a short shuttle or car ride are the fastest option; rail and highway-bus links connect Kitami with Sapporo and neighbouring cities but can be long.

By Air

Memanbetsu Airport (MMB): Memanbetsu is the closest airport to Kitami and has regular domestic flights (mainly from Sapporo/New Chitose and occasionally from Tokyo). From the terminal an airport limousine / shuttle bus runs to Kitami Station / Kitami Bus Terminal in about 30-40 minutes; expect a one-way fare around ¥850-¥1,000. Taxis to central Kitami take roughly 25-40 minutes and typically cost ¥4,000-¥6,000; rental cars are available at the airport if you plan to explore the region.

New Chitose Airport (CTS): New Chitose is Hokkaido’s main gateway if you need international connections or more flight options. You can either fly onward to Memanbetsu (about 55 minutes) then take the Memanbetsu→Kitami shuttle, or travel all the way by rail: New Chitose → Sapporo (rapid/airport train) then take the JR Limited Express Okhotsk to Kitami. Combined travel times by rail are long (roughly 6-7 hours) while flight+bus connections are much faster; total costs vary widely (¥8,000-¥25,000 depending on whether you fly or take trains and on advance fares).

By Train & Bus

Train: Kitami is served by JR Kitami Station (北見駅) on JR Hokkaido’s lines, with Limited Express Okhotsk services linking Kitami to Sapporo (via Asahikawa) and local trains to nearby Abashiri. Typical travel times: Sapporo → Kitami by limited express is a long trip (around 5-6 hours) and fares including the limited-express surcharge commonly fall in the several-thousand-yen range; Abashiri → Kitami is short (about 40-60 minutes) and much cheaper. If you plan to use the Limited Express, reserve seats in advance at JR ticket offices during busy seasons.

Bus: Local and regional buses (operated by companies such as Kitami/Abashiri-area bus operators) connect Kitami’s station with suburbs, tourist sites and Memanbetsu Airport; airport shuttles take about 30-40 minutes and cost around ¥850-¥1,000. There are also longer-distance highway buses linking Kitami with Sapporo and other Hokkaido cities - these take multiple hours (often 5-7 hours) and fares typically sit in the ¥4,000-¥6,000 range depending on route and seat type.

How to Get Around Kitami#

Getting around Kitami works best with a car for maximum flexibility, especially for visiting countryside and onsen. Public transport (JR and buses) is adequate for travel between the station, airport and town centre, but services are less frequent than in Hokkaido’s big cities, so plan schedules in advance.

  • JR Kitami (Train) (¥200-¥8,000) - JR Kitami Station is the hub for regional rail - local services plus the Limited Express Okhotsk that connects to Sapporo (via Asahikawa). Trains are comfortable and reliable, but services are infrequent compared with urban areas, so check timetables and reserve limited-express seats when possible. Use the station ticket office for seat reservations and regional timetable information.
  • Highway & Airport buses (¥210-¥6,000) - Airport shuttles between Memanbetsu Airport and Kitami are the most convenient public-bus option and take about 30-40 minutes. Local city and regional buses serve the suburbs and nearby attractions; they are cheap but run on limited schedules outside peak hours. For longer journeys (Sapporo-Kitami) highway buses are available and can be cheaper than trains, but expect multi-hour travel times.
  • Car rental (¥6,000-¥12,000/day) - Renting a car is often the most practical way to explore Kitami and the surrounding Okhotsk region, especially for reaching lakes, onsen and rural viewpoints that are poorly served by public transport. Roads are generally good; winter driving requires winter tires and experience with snow. Book ahead in high season and compare one-way fees if you plan to drop off elsewhere.
  • Taxi (¥700-¥6,500) - Taxis are handy for short hops inside town or for door-to-door airport transfers when buses don’t match your schedule. Expect higher per-kilometre costs than buses; airport trips are noticeably more expensive (several thousand yen). Taxis are reliable but can be scarce late at night, so plan accordingly.
  • Bicycle (¥500-¥1,500/day) - Kitami is fairly bike-friendly in the warmer months and cycling is a pleasant way to see parks, the city centre and nearby rural roads. Rental shops in town offer hourly and daily rates; watch for wind on exposed stretches and avoid cycling in heavy snow or ice. Cycling is a good compromise between walking and driving for short to medium excursions.
  • Walking - Kitami’s central area is compact and easy to explore on foot - shops, museums and restaurants are often within a short walk of the station. Walking is the best way to experience downtown streetscapes and local life, but distances to natural attractions or hot springs usually require a bus, bike or car.

Nightlife in Kitami#

Kitami’s nightlife is small-scale: pubs, karaoke bars and late-night ramen near the station take precedence, and winter months push more activity indoors. It’s a warm, local vibe - not a tourist party town - so head to downtown streets around Kitami Station for the easiest options. Dress warmly in cold months and expect many places to close by midnight.

Shopping in Kitami#

Kitami’s shopping is a mix of local independents and essential chain stores serving Hokkaido life. Look for local sweets, dairy-based products and practical outdoor gear; the station area and central streets cluster clothing shops, bakeries and small department stores. Expect polite service and fixed prices - special local foods make the best purchases.
