Mount Pangrango is a stratovolcanic peak on Java, Indonesia, rising to about 3,019 metres and forming a paired massif with nearby Mount Gede. It is a major feature of Mount Gede-Pangrango National Park and a popular objective for hikers and naturalists.

Trails lead to the summit via well-established routes that are frequently combined with ascents of Mount Gede across the intervening saddle. The mountain’s slopes are covered in montane and subalpine forest that supports significant biodiversity.

The area was set aside for protection as a national park in the 1980s to conserve its ecosystems and to manage visitor use. Park infrastructure includes trailheads, campsites and ranger stations to support trekking and conservation work.

Geographically the mountain sits in West Java, inland from the Jakarta metropolitan area and accessible from nearby towns such as Cianjur and Bogor.

  • Elevation and routes: Summit elevation is about 3,019 metres and it is often climbed together with nearby Mount Gede via a connecting saddle.
  • Conservation: The area is protected for montane rainforest and supports significant biodiversity, including endemic plants and birds.

How to Get to Mount Pangrango #

Mount Pangrango is accessed through Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park; the most commonly used trailhead is at Cibodas. From Bogor or Jakarta you drive toward the Puncak/Cipanas/Cibodas area and follow local roads to the Cibodas park entrance and Botanical Garden, where parking and the official trailhead are located. Minibuses (angkot/antar kota) and private transfers from Bogor or Jakarta serve the Puncak/Cipanas corridor; from the Cibodas entrance it’s a short walk to the park registration and trail start.

Tips for Visiting Mount Pangrango #

  • Enter and register at the Gede Pangrango National Park office in Cibodas when approaching Mount Pangrango from the common Cibodas trailhead-this is the standard access point and the park enforces registration.
  • Consider tackling Pangrango as a two-day itinerary or combining it with nearby Mount Gede: the approaches are long and many hikers use an overnight camp to avoid very early starts and to split the long ascent and descent into safer segments.

Best Time to Visit Mount Pangrango #

Mount Pangrango (part of Gede-Pangrango) is best during the island's drier months (roughly April-October) when trails are firmer and access is easier.

Dry season (best for trails)
April-October · 5-20°C (summit to base)
The drier months usually offer firmer, less muddy trails and clearer skies-ideal for multi-day treks in the Gede-Pangrango area.
Wet season
November-March · 10-25°C (humid)
Heavy tropical rains and frequent storms make trails slippery and increase leech/mosquito activity; many hikers avoid this period.
Cooler summit conditions
Year-round · ~5-15°C at higher elevations
Temperatures drop noticeably with altitude-expect cooler nights and bring warm layers for summit or overnight trips.
