Mount Mulu is a prominent peak within Gunung Mulu National Park in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. The park is internationally recognised for its karst caves and rich tropical biodiversity.
The mountain forms part of the park’s montane zone and is visited by hikers using established trails that connect lowland rainforest to higher-elevation forest types. The wider park is home to major cave systems such as Deer Cave and Clearwater Cave and supports diverse flora and fauna.
The mountain and surrounding park have been the focus of biological exploration and conservation due to the high species diversity and distinctive karst topography. Access is organised from the Mulu park headquarters and village; travel normally involves boat or small aircraft to the park followed by guided treks.
Mount Mulu sits in northern Sarawak on the island of Borneo, within a protected national park boundary characterised by steep limestone and sandstone terrain and dense tropical forest.

How to Get to Mount Mulu #
Gunung Mulu National Park is reached primarily by small plane from Miri or Kuching to Mulu Airport, followed by short transfers to the park headquarters. Some longer river routes exist but are less commonly used by international visitors.
Tips for Visiting Mount Mulu #
- Reserve flights and the park entrance permit well in advance - access is limited and the park controls visitor numbers.
- Bring a headlamp for cave trips; even guided tours through Deer Cave and Clearwater require solid lighting.
- Expect sudden tropical downpours in the afternoon; waterproof cases for gear are sensible.
