Quick essentials for planning a 3-5 day trek on Mount Mulanje.
Time to Hike: 3-5 days depending on itinerary and pace; routes vary so allow extra time for bad weather or side trips.
Best Time to Go: May to October in the dry season for firmer trails and clearer views; the rains bring slippery rock and limited visibility.
Getting there: Reach the massif from Blantyre by road; most walkers base themselves in Mulanje town and walk from nearby trailheads.
Costs: Modest overall but expect forest reserve entry or hut fees, plus guide and porter costs if hired; bring cash for local services and supplies in Mulanje town.

About Mount Mulanje#
Mulanje Massif is a compact, dramatic block of granite with sheer cliffs, deep gorges, waterfalls and pockets of montane forest. Hikes move from cultivated lower slopes and pine plantations into misty indigenous forest, open grassland plateaus and narrow skyline ridges that give big views over southern Malawi.
Highlights include the ridge walks, the classic approach to Chambe and the dome-like summit area around Sapitwa, plus several notable waterfalls. Overnighting is a mix of basic staffed mountain huts and campsites; many walkers hire local guides and porters for route-finding and to carry food and kit.
Getting There#
The nearest major city and transport hub is Blantyre, which has the closest commercial airport and long-distance bus connections. From Blantyre take a minibus or taxi to Mulanje town where you can arrange permits, guides and transport to trailheads.
Most trekkers start from villages near Mulanje town and climb into the massif from the lower valleys; exact starting points vary with the chosen itinerary and weather.
Best Time to Hike#
The walkable season is primarily the dry months of May to October when trails are firmer and visibility is better; nights can be cold at higher camps in the middle of the dry season. Rainy months from November to April bring heavy showers, slippery rock and limited route visibility.
Huts and local guiding services are available but book or confirm arrangements in Mulanje town during peak months. Always prepare for sudden weather changes, carry waterproofs and allow extra time if forecasts predict rain.
