How to Get to Monkey Bay
Monkey Bay is reached mainly by road from Blantyre or Lilongwe. Minibuses and intercity coaches are the common public options; private transfers are faster and more comfortable when available.
Chileka / Blantyre International (BLZ): Blantyre (Chileka) is the main international/regional airport for southern Malawi. From Blantyre to Monkey Bay the road journey is about 3-4 hours by bus or private transfer; minibuses and intercity coaches run the route-expect modest fares and travel times depending on stops.
Lilongwe (LLW): Lilongwe is another national airport; overland travel from Lilongwe to Monkey Bay is considerably longer (5+ hours) by road and is typically done by intercity coach or private transfer.
Train: Malawi has very limited passenger rail services and none that serve Monkey Bay directly; travel is by road.
Bus / Minibus (dala-dala): Regular minibuses and intercity coaches run between Blantyre, Mangochi and Monkey Bay. Fares are inexpensive (local currency) and journey times vary; minibuses are frequent but can be crowded and leave when full.
