Mountain Sacred Shinto mountain housing ancient Omiwa shrine
Small sacred mountain near Sakurai in Nara Prefecture; pilgrims and cultural visitors come to Omiwa Shrine and to inspect nearby ancient burial mounds.
Mount Miwa is a small, sacred mountain in Nara Prefecture that holds central importance in Shinto practice and Japanese religious history. It is closely associated with the nearby Ōmiwa Shrine, one of Japan’s oldest Shinto shrines.
The mountain is considered a kami (divine presence) in its own right and was an early focus of mountain worship in Japan. Visitors to the area primarily come to the shrine precincts and for short hikes on marked paths rather than for alpine climbing.
The mountain and shrine have been places of ritual and pilgrimage since ancient times and appear in Japan’s early historical and mythological records. Contemporary shrine management preserves traditional practices tied to the mountain itself.
Mount Miwa rises above the city of Sakurai in central Nara Prefecture and is easily reached from local roads and rail links serving the Nara region.

- Unique shrine practice: the mountain itself is treated as the primary object of worship at Ōmiwa Shrine, which lacks a conventional honden (main hall) for enshrining a deity
