Hokki-ji is a Buddhist temple in Ikaruga, Nara Prefecture, Japan, notable for its early medieval architecture and a prominent three-story pagoda. It is included in the UNESCO World Heritage serial site “Buddhist Monuments in the Hōryū-ji Area.”

The temple complex contains a wooden three-story pagoda and a main hall arranged in a classical layout, with stone pathways and small museum displays of archaeological finds. Visitors come to study early Japanese temple architecture and preserved statuary.

The site is compact and frequently visited in combination with nearby Hōryū-ji and other historic monuments in Ikaruga.

Hokki-ji was founded in the Asuka to Nara period and its principal buildings preserve building forms and materials characteristic of early Japanese Buddhist temple design. The compound has been repaired and conserved over centuries.

The temple stands in the town of Ikaruga in Nara Prefecture, close to other early Buddhist sites in the Hōryū-ji area and accessible from Nara city by road.

From Nara city or Osaka, take local trains toward Ikaruga/Hōryū-ji (JR and private rail services serve the area); get off at Hōryūji or Ikaruga station and walk about 15-25 minutes to the temple grounds or take a short taxi. By car it’s a short drive from central Nara (roughly 15-30 minutes depending on start point).

• Visit early in the morning outside of peak tourist hours at nearby Hōryū-ji-Hokki-ji is quieter than its famous neighbor and is best appreciated before coach groups arrive.
