Mount Misen
Mountain Sacred Miyajima mountain offering panoramic sea views
On Miyajima Island Mount Misen tops trails that lead past temples and observation points over the Seto Inland Sea; tourists link the hike with Itsukushima Shrine and ferry visits.
Mount Misen is a 535-meter mountain on the island of Itsukushima (Miyajima) in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan. It is the island’s highest point and a prominent local landmark.
A short ropeway serves the mountain and there are multiple hiking routes to the summit; the top has observation points with panoramic views across the Seto Inland Sea. The summit area also contains small religious and historic sites that visitors often pass on the way up.
The mountain has long been associated with religious practice on Miyajima and contains several small shrines and temple-related structures clustered along summit routes. Over time the trails have been formalized and a ropeway was added to improve visitor access.
Situated on Itsukushima island, Mount Misen is reached by a brief ferry from the mainland port at Miyajimaguchi, near Hiroshima city. The island setting gives the summit clear views over the surrounding inland sea.
- Access: The ropeway carries visitors partway up the slope, shortening the ascent and linking to several short summit trails.
- Best views: Clear days offer wide panoramas across the Seto Inland Sea and nearby islands from the summit viewing points.
