Mount Lokon
Mountain Active stratovolcano in North Sulawesi, Indonesia
Active stratovolcano near Tomohon and Manado on Sulawesi. Visitors hike to the crater rim for fumarolic vents and broad views over Manado Bay and surrounding highlands; local Minahasan markets and roadside warungs make a practical base.
Mount Lokon is an active stratovolcano in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, forming part of the Lokon-Empung volcanic complex with an elevation around 1,580 meters. It is one of the region’s active volcanic centers and is monitored for eruptive activity.
The saddle between Lokon and Mount Empung contains the principal active vent known as the Tompaluan crater - the site of many recent eruptions. Hikers and visitors commonly approach from nearby towns, and lookouts provide views over the crater and surrounding agricultural plain for several kilometers.
The Lokon-Empung complex has produced frequent small to moderate eruptions in recent decades; monitoring and local hazard planning are in place because of nearby settlements. Volcanic activity has shaped local landforms and soils used for agriculture.
The volcano lies inland on northern Sulawesi, near the city of Tomohon and within driving distance of the provincial capital, Manado. The surrounding landscape is a mix of cultivated lowlands and steep volcanic slopes.
- Elevation and complex: Approximately 1,580 meters high and part of the Lokon-Empung complex, which includes two closely spaced stratovolcanoes.
- Access: Located close to the towns of Tomohon and the provincial capital Manado, making it one of North Sulawesi's more accessible active volcanoes.
What to See #
- Tompaluan crater: The Tompaluan crater sits on the saddle between the twin peaks and is the main active vent for eruptions in the Lokon-Empung complex.
How to Get to Mount Lokon #
From Manado (the nearest major city), take a private car or regular minibus/angkot on the main road toward Tomohon (the Manado-Tomohon route along the Trans‑Sulawesi road). The drive from Manado to the Tomohon/Mount Lokon area is roughly 30-40 km and typically takes under an hour by car. From Tomohon you can hire a local taxi or motorbike (ojek) to the parking/trailhead near the villages at the volcano’s base; the hiking trail to the crater begins a short walk from the trailhead (often under a couple of kilometres).
Tips for Visiting Mount Lokon #
- Check Indonesia's volcanology alerts (PVMBG) before travel and on the day of your hike - access is routinely restricted when activity rises and conditions can change quickly.
- Book a guided dawn hike from Tomohon or Manado to improve chances of clear views over Manado Bay and to avoid daytime cloud cover; local guides know which routes are currently safe and where fumaroles are active.
- Stay well clear of unstable fumarole areas and follow your guide's instructions closely; volcanic gas and loose ground near the crater present real hazards even when the volcano is at a low alert level.
Best Time to Visit Mount Lokon #
Plan to go in the dry season (roughly May-October) for the clearest, driest conditions, and always check volcanic activity advisories before visiting.
