Mount Kumotori
Mountain Highest peak in Tokyo prefecture, popular hiking destination
Tokyo’s highest mountain, on the prefectural boundary, frequented by hikers tackling ridge routes and multi-stage trails that link Tokyo’s western forests with regional mountain ranges.
Mount Kumotori is a mountain on the boundary of Tokyo Metropolis and neighbouring prefectures, notable as Tokyo’s highest point. It forms part of the Okuchichibu mountain range.
Hikers use well-marked ridgelines and trails that connect to nearby mountain huts and passes, making it a common multi-day route for walkers exploring the Chichibu-Tama-Kai and Okuchichibu ranges. The summit provides broad views over wooded slopes and, in clear weather, distant mountain ranges.
The mountain has long been part of traditional transit and pilgrimage routes linking interior valleys and passes; over the 20th century it became established in modern walking guides and regional conservation planning. Trails and small shelters were developed to support recreational hiking.
Located in the western reaches of Tokyo Metropolis, the summit sits on the border with Saitama and Yamanashi prefectures. Access is typically from the Okutama and surrounding mountain towns via trailheads and forest roads.
- Highest point in Tokyo: At about 2,017 metres it is the highest peak within Tokyo Metropolis and marks a boundary between Tokyo and neighbouring prefectures.
Tips for Visiting Mount Kumotori #
- Start very early from the usual Okutama/West‑Tokyo trailheads to avoid weekend crowds and to reach the summit ridge before afternoon winds pick up; Kumotori is Tokyo's highest peak so it attracts many hikers on good-weather days.
- Use the established trails from Okutama (the common access point) and check trailhead parking/bus schedules the day before-public transport connections are limited outside peak season.
- If you want fewer people on the summit, choose a weekday or an off‑season shoulder month; many day‑hikers concentrate on weekends, while weekday visitors are far fewer.
Best Time to Visit Mount Kumotori #
Best from late spring through autumn (May-October) when trails are clear; winter ascents require winter skills and gear.
