Mount Kenya

Mountain Kenya's highest mountain and ancient volcanic massif

Africa’s second-highest peak, Mount Kenya presents jagged summits, alpine moorland and equatorial glaciers; trekkers use routes like Naro Moru and Sirimon, while technical climbers attempt Batian and Nelion.

Main image

Mount Kenya is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa, with its highest summit, Batian, reaching 5,199 metres. It is a volcanic massif with prominent peaks and distinctive alpine ecology.

Trekking routes lead to Point Lenana, at around 4,985 metres, which is a non-technical summit popular for multi-day hikes and sunrise viewpoints. The higher peaks Batian and Nelion require technical rock climbing and attract experienced mountaineers.

The mountain contains moorland and Afro-alpine zones, with unique flora such as giant lobelia and senecio, and glacial features on the upper slopes that are significant for hydrology and biodiversity.

Mount Kenya’s volcanic activity formed the massif millions of years ago and later glaciation sculpted its peaks. The mountain has cultural significance for local communities and was explored and mapped by European climbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The massif sits in central Kenya, rising above surrounding highlands and serving as a critical watershed for rivers that flow into both the Rift Valley and the Kenyan lowlands.

  • Technical climbs: Higher technical summits require rope and rock-climbing skills and are normally attempted with experienced mountain guides and permits.
  • Ecological importance: The mountain supports Afro-alpine vegetation zones and glacier remnants at the highest elevations, important for local water catchment.
