Meru National Park

Meru National Park is a protected wildlife area in Isiolo County in eastern Kenya, designated to conserve local savanna and riverine ecosystems. It is locally notable for its role in wildlife conservation and for associations with mid-20th-century conservationists.

The park offers game drives along riverine corridors and open plains where one can see large mammals and diverse birdlife; sightings are most frequent at water sources and during cooler hours of the day. Facilities are limited compared with larger Kenyan parks, so expect basic visitor services and a focus on guided drives and walking safaris.

The reserve was created to protect regional wildlife populations and river habitats; its boundaries and management have changed over time with evolving conservation measures. It has been managed to balance wildlife protection with pastoral and local-use pressures.

The park sits in Isiolo County in eastern Kenya, inland from the Kenyan coast and northeast of Mount Kenya; the nearest major towns are Isiolo and Meru, with the area characterised by semi-arid plains and riverine forest along its waterways.

• Access note: The park is remote with limited infrastructure, so access is typically by 4x4 road or small aircraft to nearby airstrips.

• Plan game drives for the dry season (roughly June-October) when animals concentrate at water and sightings are most reliable; early morning and late afternoon drives give the best light and activity.
• Roads inside and to Meru can be rough-book a vehicle with high clearance (4x4) and go with a local guide or ranger who knows the park tracks and wildlife patterns.
