Mount Carmel is a coastal mountain range in northern Israel that rises from the Mediterranean coast near the city of Haifa. It is a green, forested ridge with several peaks and valleys running roughly northwest-southeast.
The area includes wooded slopes, nature reserves and developed urban areas; the northern slope in Haifa is occupied by formal terraces and gardens. The ridge is a distinct landscape feature separating the Haifa bay area from the inland plains.
Mount Carmel has long cultural and religious associations, appearing in ancient texts and in later historical records; it has been used for agriculture, forest resources and pilgrimage over millennia. Portions of the range are protected as national parkland and recreation areas.
The mountain lies immediately southwest of the city of Haifa on Israel’s Mediterranean coast and forms part of the coastal topography of the Haifa District.
