About Mount Blue Sky#
Mount Blue Sky is a 4,349 m (14,271 ft) peak in Colorado’s Front Range, officially renamed in 2023 from its previous name. It is a prominent fourteen-thousand-foot mountain directly west of the Denver metropolitan area.
A paved highway known as the Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway climbs from the valley and reaches about 4,307 m (14,130 ft), bringing vehicles very near the summit; the final approach is a short alpine hike above treeline. The area is popular for driving, short summit hikes, alpine wildflower viewing and wildlife observation.
Historically long known by a different name, the mountain has also hosted scientific and recreational visits for much of the 20th and 21st centuries; vehicle access was developed to allow scenic drives and research at high elevation.
The peak sits in the Front Range roughly 60 miles west of Denver, near Idaho Springs and Echo Lake, within public national forest land and designated wilderness areas.
- Seasonal access: Road access usually opens seasonally; snow closures mean the byway is typically open from late spring through early autumn depending on conditions.
- Altitude safety: Summit elevation above 14,000 ft makes altitude sickness a real risk; allow time to acclimatize and carry water and warm clothing.
What to See#
