The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is a major historic mosque in Cairo, Egypt, dating to the late 9th century and commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun. It is one of the oldest surviving mosques in the city and is noted for its large open courtyard and distinctive minaret.
The mosque’s expansive sahn (courtyard), the hypostyle prayer hall with long rows of columns, and the external spiral minaret that echoes Abbasid designs from Samarra. The complex covers a substantial area and remains a working mosque as well as a site of architectural interest.
Construction took place under Ahmad ibn Tulun during his governance of Egypt in the 9th century, with commonly cited building dates around 876-879 AD. Over the centuries the mosque has undergone repairs and restorations but retains much of its original Abbasid character.

The Mosque of Ibn Tulun is in Islamic Cairo, north of the Citadel. From central Cairo take a taxi to Al-Saliba or Sayyida Zeinab; the site is reachable by local buses but taxi or ride-hail is the most convenient. The mosque is a short walk from the Gabalaya Bridge area.
