Morne Seychellois National Park
National Park Largest Seychellois national park covering mountainous rainforest
Morne Seychellois National Park covers Mahé’s highlands, with hiking routes through native forest to viewpoints, endemic flora, and trails reaching Morne Seychellois summit for island panoramas.
Morne Seychellois National Park is the largest protected area on Mahé, the main island of the Seychelles, and protects upland rainforest, ridges and the island’s highest terrain. The park preserves native vegetation and important watersheds for the island.
Visitors use a network of trails to reach ridge viewpoints, waterfalls and forested summits, with opportunities to see endemic plants and bird species. The park is an important recreational area for hiking and nature observation, with routes ranging from short walks to longer ridge hikes.
The park was designated to conserve Mahé’s remaining native forest and watershed areas and to protect species unique to the Seychelles archipelago. Management focuses on habitat protection, trail maintenance and regulating visitor access to sensitive zones.
Geographically the park covers the central and western highlands of Mahé and includes Morne Seychellois, the island’s highest summit; it lies immediately west of Victoria and contributes the steep, forested backdrop to the capital and coastal settlements.
- Hiking and vegetation: Contains the island of Mahé's highest ground and a network of hiking trails through montane cloud forest; many trails originate within easy reach of the capital.
What to See #
- Morne Seychellois peak: The park's highest point and namesake peak at about 905 metres, offering trekking routes to viewpoints that look across Mahé and the inner islands on clear days.
How to Get to Morne Seychellois National Park #
Morne Seychellois National Park covers much of Mahé’s interior and is reached by road from Victoria and the island’s coastal settlements. From Victoria (the capital) drive up the winding mountain roads from the main coastal route (the island’s primary roads lead into the park area); many trailheads and picnic areas are reached within a 15-40 minute drive from Victoria depending on the chosen trailhead. Taxis and rental cars are the most convenient way to reach specific trailheads; some ACTION-style local bus services run to nearby villages - expect a short walk from the bus stop to trailheads.
Tips for Visiting Morne Seychellois National Park #
- Start very early for summit- or ridge-trails (Morne Blanc/Trois Frères) - mornings tend to have clearer views before convective cloud and afternoon showers set in.
- Enter from the main trailheads on the more accessible northern side (near Victoria) and collect a current trail map or local advice first; some ridge routes become slippery and confusing after rain.
- Hire a local guide for lesser-used routes if you want quieter forest sections and help locating endemic plants and viewpoints that most day visitors miss.
