Mahé
Island Seychelles' main island, cultural and administrative center
Mahé hosts Victoria, the country’s capital, sandy beaches, Creole eateries and Morne Seychellois National Park; visitors combine city markets, coastal drives and mountain hikes.
Mahé is the largest and most populous island of the Seychelles archipelago and contains the national capital, Victoria. It is the political, economic and transport centre of the country and combines coastal resorts with mountainous forest interior.
Coastal attractions on Mahé include several well-known beaches such as Beau Vallon and numerous smaller coves used for swimming and snorkelling, while the interior features ridgelines and native forest within protected areas. The island supports visitor services, accommodation and the main international airport.
Over the 19th and 20th centuries Mahé developed as the colonial and later national administrative centre of the Seychelles; the capital and port concentrated government, commerce and transport functions. Conservation measures in recent decades have focused on protecting remaining native forest and shoreline habitats.
Geographically Mahé lies among the inner islands of the Seychelles north of Madagascar in the western Indian Ocean; the capital and airport are both on Mahé, which serves as the primary arrival point for international visitors to the archipelago.
- Transport hub: Mahé is the principal transport hub of the Seychelles, containing the main international airport and the country's principal port and administrative capital.
- Coast and interior: The island combines coastal resort beaches with steep, forested interior ridges; beach activities concentrate on the leeward northwest while trails access the central highlands.
What to See #
- Victoria: The national capital and administrative centre located on Mahé's northeast coast, containing government offices, the main market and harbour facilities.
- Beau Vallon: A popular sheltered bay on the island's northwest coast known for its long sandy shore, swim-friendly waters and a range of beachside facilities and water-sports operators.
- Seychelles International Airport: The international airport serving Seychelles, located on the east coast of Mahé and providing the primary air link to the archipelago.
- Morne Seychellois (interior): Extensive upland rainforest and ridgelines that form the island's interior, protected within Morne Seychellois National Park and offering numerous hiking routes.
How to Get to Mahé #
Mahé is served by Seychelles International Airport (SEZ) near Anse aux Pins. The airport is about an 8-12 km drive to central Victoria and the parliamentary triangle via Commonwealth Avenue/Kings Avenue (typically 15-25 minutes by car depending on traffic). Public buses, taxis and rental cars connect the airport with Victoria and the island’s beaches; many of Mahé’s main attractions are a short drive from Victoria along the island’s main coastal roads.
Tips for Visiting Mahé #
- Avoid driving around Victoria during weekday rush hours (roughly early morning and late afternoon); schedule beach or coastal trips outside those windows to save time and stress.
- Base yourself on the west coast (Beau Vallon/Anse à la Mouche) if you want easy access to the island's most-visited beaches and snorkeling departures-many day services and ferries operate from those hubs.
- Spend at least a half-day inland (Morne Seychellois foothills) for rainforest trails and viewpoints-these interior areas are often overlooked by beach-focused visitors yet offer quieter scenery and panoramic island views.
Best Time to Visit Mahé #
Visit Mahé in the drier months (May-September) for cooler, breezier conditions and more reliable outdoor plans.
