Why Visit Morelos #

Hike up Cerro del Tepozteco to the small Aztec temple overlooking Tepoztlán; the trail is steep but short, and the summit offers sweeping valley views. Arrive early to avoid heat and crowds, then explore Tepoztlán’s market for barbacoa, amaranth sweets and artisan crafts.

Xochicalco presents well-preserved ballcourts, observatory structures and reliefs from the Classic period; it’s less crowded than major archaeological sites and rewards a slow, curious visit. The museum on-site helps decode glyphs and architecture, so you won’t miss the historical significance.

Cuernavaca still feels like a garden city - explore Jardín Borda and small museums such as the Robert Brady Collection for art-filled patios and colonial rooms. The city’s mild climate makes it easy to combine garden visits with an afternoon café or a local market stroll.

See Chinelos dancers during carnival and local fiestas: masked performers in layered costumes and high-stepping choreography that originated in Morelos. Performances are exuberant and communal; if you can’t catch a festival, local cultural centers often stage demonstrations and workshops.

For dry forest ecosystems and nocturnal wildlife, Sierra de Huautla’s biosphere reserve offers hiking and birdwatching away from the central towns. Guided treks reveal endemic plants and a quieter side of Morelos; bring insect repellent and a local guide to get the most from the trails.

Regular bus services link Mexico City with Cuernavaca, Tepoztlán and other towns in the state.

Morelos is compact but mountainous in parts-short distances on the map can involve steep, winding roads. Many archaeological and mountain sites are best reached by car or local taxis/collectivos rather than fixed-route public transit.
