Chalcatzingo Archaeological Site

Chalcatzingo is an archaeological site in the state of Morelos, Mexico, that was a ceremonial and residential center during the Middle Preclassic period of Mesoamerican history. The site is especially known for a number of large bas-relief carvings cut into bedrock and for earthwork platforms and plazas.

Key visitor features are the carved rock reliefs and the remains of ceremonial architecture, including platform mounds and plazas set into a terraced landscape. The carved panels show stylized figures and motifs that indicate connections with wider Formative-period traditions in central Mexico.

Archaeological investigations have focused on the carved monuments and the site’s role in early regional ceremonial networks. Chalcatzingo lies in a river valley in southern Morelos and is accessed from local towns in the region.

Chalcatzingo is roughly 1.5-2 hours by car from Cuernavaca, Morelos. Take the Mexico City-Cuernavaca motorway (Highway 95D) then local roads toward the Chalcatzingo area. Public buses run to nearby towns; from there hire local transport to the site.

Local signage can be sparse; use GPS and local guidance for the final stretches.

• Visit the Olmec and preclassic carvings in the ceremonial centre early in the day to avoid heat and to see reliefs clearly.
• Wear a hat and bring sun protection-the valley can be unforgiving during midday.
