How to Get to Montreux

Montreux is easiest to reach by rail: Geneva Airport and Zurich Airport both offer rail links to the town, but Geneva is far quicker. Montreux's lakeside station is central and well served by SBB and the scenic GoldenPass (MOB) services.

By Air

Geneva Airport (GVA): Genève-Aéroport has frequent Swiss Federal Railways (SBB/CFF/FFS) connections from the station under the terminal to Montreux (usually via Genève and Lausanne). Typical journey time is about 1h-1h 30m depending on connections; expect single fares roughly CHF 25-45 (cheaper with supersaver offers).

Zurich Airport (ZRH): Zurich Airport links with Chur and then onward connections to Montreux; direct routes require a change (usually at Zürich HB and Lausanne). Travel time is about 2h 45m-3h; fares are higher than from Geneva (roughly CHF 50-90 depending on seat reservations and discounts).

By Train & Bus

Train: Montreux railway station (Gare de Montreux) sits on the SBB mainline and is served by InterRegio/InterCity services via Lausanne and Geneva, plus the scenic GoldenPass Line (MOB) toward Gstaad/Zweisimmen. Typical journey times: Geneva-Montreux ~1h-1h15m; Lausanne-Montreux ~20-25m. Expect point-to-point fares in the CHF 10-45 range depending on origin and discounts.

Bus: Regional PostBus (CarPostal) services and private coaches connect Montreux with nearby villages and mountain resorts; longer-distance coach operators (FlixBus/others) run occasional routes to/from Lausanne and Geneva area. Regional journeys are usually 20-90 minutes; fares vary widely (CHF ~5-25 for common regional runs).

How to Get Around Montreux #

Montreux is very walkable along the lakeside promenade and through the compact town centre. Trains (SBB) stop frequently at Montreux station, local buses serve neighborhoods, and boats run on Lake Geneva in summer. Taxis and bike rentals are available but Switzerland is pricey-expect public-transport single trips to be comparable with other Swiss regional fares. Tip: buy point-to-point tickets or a day pass if you’ll make multiple trips; during the Jazz Festival, allow extra time for crowds.

Nightlife in Montreux #

Nightlife centres on concert venues and a handful of bars along the waterfront; the town livens considerably during the Montreux Jazz Festival in July. Outside festival season expect cosy hotel bars, music venues and the casino for late‑night options rather than a large club scene.

Shopping in Montreux #

Shopping is compact and focused along the lakeside and in the pedestrian streets. You’ll find boutique fashion, regional food shops and seasonal markets rather than big malls.
