Montecristo National Park
National Park Volcanic national park preserving cloud forest on Montecristo
In Santa Ana’s highlands, Montecristo National Park preserves cloud forest and Cerro Montecristo; visitors follow cool trails through moss‑draped trees for hiking, birdwatching and views into neighboring Guatemala and Honduras.
Montecristo National Park in El Salvador protects the Montecristo massif, a high-elevation forested area in the Santa Ana Department. The park conserves cloud forest and montane habitats that are ecologically distinct from surrounding lowlands.
The park was established to preserve the Montecristo cloud forest and its watershed, which straddles the tri-border area with Honduras and Guatemala. Conservation efforts have focused on protecting remaining native forest and managing visitor access.
Located in western El Salvador’s Santa Ana Department, the park sits on the Montecristo massif near El Salvador’s borders with Honduras and Guatemala. The terrain is mountainous and heavily forested.
- Climate note: Higher-elevation trails lead into a cloud forest with frequent fog and cooler temperatures than nearby lowlands.
Tips for Visiting Montecristo National Park #
- Plan visits during the dry season (roughly November-April) when trails in the cloud forest are easiest and views from the summit are clearest.
- Start early for birding and to reach the Montecristo summit viewpoint before the clouds build-the massif gives panoramic views over the Trifinio border area where three countries meet.
- Use the official Salvadoran park entrance on the Santa Ana side and consider hiring a local guide from nearby towns to navigate steep, often muddy trails and to learn about the cloud-forest flora that many visitors overlook.
