Monte Albán is a major archaeological complex and the ancient capital of the Zapotec civilization, located on a flattened mountaintop overlooking the Oaxaca Valley. The site is notable for its large artificial plaza, pyramidal platforms and carved stone monuments.

Visitors can walk among terraces, pyramidal platforms and carved reliefs, with views across the valley from the site’s main plaza. Excavated groups include residential and ceremonial platforms, ballcourts and sculpted stone features.

Founded around 500 BCE, Monte Albán was a political and ceremonial centre for the Zapotecs and remained important through the Classic period and into the early post-Classic era. The site shows phases of construction and modification over many centuries as the regional political landscape changed.

Monte Albán sits atop a leveled hill about 8 to 10 kilometres west of Oaxaca City, commanding views across the surrounding valley and agricultural terraces.

  • Photography light: Sunrise and late-afternoon light across the plaza and terraces provides the best photographic conditions and emphasizes the site's relief and sightlines.

What to See #

  • Main Plaza: A large central plaza framed by terraces and pyramidal mounds that served as the civic and ceremonial heart of the ancient city.
  • Ballcourts and platform groups: Pairs of long low platforms interpreted as ballcourts and ritual performance spaces set along the plaza margins.
  • Danzantes and carved monuments: Carved stone reliefs and anthropomorphic figures known as the Danzantes that were cut into the site's rock faces and monuments.

How to Get to Monte Albán #

Monte Albán is located on a ridge approximately 8-10 km west of Oaxaca de Juárez. The site is about a 20-30 minute drive from Oaxaca city along the road out toward the archaeological zone (the route from Oaxaca city follows the main road west toward carretera federal 190). Visitors commonly reach the site by taxi, private car or shared shuttle/colectivo from Oaxaca city centre (Zócalo); there is a short walk from the parking area up to the main plaza and terraces.

Tips for Visiting Monte Albán #

  • Plan to visit Monte Albán right at opening to avoid mid-day heat and tour-bus peaks and to enjoy clearer views across the Oaxaca Valley from the main plaza.
  • Hire a licensed local guide at the site entrance if you want archaeological context - guides are available on-site and point out features (like the carved 'Danseurs' reliefs) that are easy to miss on your own.
  • Walk the raised platforms and terraces around the central plaza rather than sticking to the main stelae area; the broader site layout and valley vistas are highlights many visitors overlook.
