Monsanto Forest Park

Monsanto Forest Park is an extensive municipal forest and urban park on the western side of Lisbon, Portugal, and is the city’s principal large green area. It functions as a recreational and ecological buffer inside the urban area.

The park contains forested slopes, marked and unmarked trails, picnic and leisure areas and viewpoints that give panoramas over Lisbon and the Tagus River on clear days. It is used for walking, jogging, cycling and informal outdoor sports rather than concentrated tourist attractions.

Developed and managed as municipal green space during the 20th century, the park has been maintained to provide urban recreation and to conserve remnant forest within the growing city. Management combines public recreation with forest management on a municipal scale.

Located on the hills immediately west of central Lisbon, the park occupies a series of slopes and ridges overlooking the city and estuary. It is directly accessible from several city neighbourhoods and serves as a green belt for Lisbon.

• Activities: Offers mountain-biking and walking trails integrated with informal recreation areas rather than formal botanical displays.

• Visit early on weekdays or in the late afternoon to avoid busy weekend family crowds that concentrate around the main picnic and playground areas.
• Enter from bordering neighborhoods such as Benfica or Campolide and follow the park's interior signposted footpaths rather than the busy paved ring roads to find quieter trails, old quarries and small viewpoints most visitors overlook.
• Use public transport for approach (metro/bus to neighborhoods next to the park) whenever possible-parking near main entrances is limited on weekends and forces you onto the busiest sections.
