How to Get to Miyajima, Hiroshima
Miyajima (Itsukushima) is easiest to reach via Hiroshima: fly into Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) or arrive by shinkansen at Hiroshima Station, then take the local JR train to Miyajimaguchi and a short ferry to the island. The ferry is very frequent and the final crossing is short.
Hiroshima Airport (HIJ): Hiroshima Airport (HIJ) is the closest airport to Miyajima (Itsukushima). From HIJ take the direct airport limousine bus to Hiroshima Station (about 45-50 minutes, fare approx. JPY 1,350), then transfer to the JR Sanyo Line/local JR train to Miyajimaguchi (about 25 minutes, fare approx. JPY 410). From Miyajimaguchi take the ferry to Miyajima (ferry crossing about 10 minutes, fare approx. JPY 180; JR ferry included if you hold a JR pass).
Osaka / Kansai International (KIX) or Hiroshima via Shinkansen: Many visitors arrive via Kansai (KIX) or by shinkansen to Hiroshima Station; from Hiroshima Station the JR train to Miyajimaguchi plus the short ferry to the island is the standard route (total transfer time from Hiroshima Station ~35-45 minutes).
Train: The most convenient rail route is JR to Hiroshima Station, then the JR Sanyo Line (or local JR lines) to Miyajimaguchi; the train leg is around 20-30 minutes and ferries depart frequently (10 minutes). If you have a JR Pass, the JR ferry crossing to Miyajima is covered.
Bus: Local buses run to ferry terminals and around Miyajima island; buses and tourist shuttles serve parts of the island but much of Miyajima is best explored on foot. From Hiroshima Airport there is also a direct airport bus to the Miyajimaguchi area (check schedules).
How to Get Around Miyajima, Hiroshima #
Miyajima (Itsukushima) is extremely walkable - the island is compact and most sights are within easy walking distance of the ferry terminal. Cars are restricted on the island. Ferries run frequently from Miyajimaguchi (about a 10-minute crossing); expect a small fare for the short trip and good connections from Hiroshima by train.
