Misliya Cave
Archaeological Site Prehistoric cave site in Israel with ancient human remains
On Mount Carmel near Haifa, Misliya Cave is an archaeological site where early modern human remains and stone tools were recovered; researchers and history-minded visitors study its Palaeolithic layers.
Misliya Cave is a prehistoric archaeological site on the Carmel Ridge in Israel’s Haifa District that has produced early modern human remains and a rich stone tool assemblage. Finds from the site have been important in debates about the timing of early Homo sapiens migrations out of Africa.
Excavations recovered a human jawbone and associated artifacts; the jawbone has been dated to roughly 177,000 to 194,000 years ago in published research, making it one of the oldest anatomically modern human finds outside Africa. The site has also yielded stone tools and faunal remains that inform regional Palaeolithic research.
Fieldwork at Misliya Cave was undertaken by teams of archaeologists using modern excavation and dating techniques; results have been published in peer-reviewed literature. The cave is located on the slopes of Mount Carmel overlooking the coastal plain.
The site lies in the Haifa District on Mount Carmel in northern Israel, within the broader Carmel limestone landscape and close to the Mediterranean coastal plain.
- Early modern human remains: A Homo sapiens jawbone from the site, often called Misliya-1, has been dated to roughly 177,000 to 194,000 years ago and is cited in discussions of early modern human dispersal.
