Ming Xiaoling is the mausoleum of the Hongwu Emperor, the founder of the Ming dynasty, located on Purple Mountain in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China and largely completed in the late 14th century.
Commissioned by the Hongwu Emperor, construction began after the foundation of the Ming dynasty and the complex was largely finished by the late 1300s. Over subsequent centuries the site received maintenance, repairs and additional structures in keeping with imperial tomb traditions.
The mausoleum sits on the southern slopes of Purple Mountain in eastern Nanjing, within the city’s mountainous park area and administered as part of the wider cultural landscape of historic Nanjing.

- Arrive early to walk the Sacred Way (Shéndào) before tour buses arrive - the avenue of stone animals is atmospheric in morning light.
- Wear good walking shoes - the site covers large distances and includes steps and shaded slopes.
- Combine with a visit to nearby Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum and Purple Mountain observatory for a full afternoon on the mountain.
