Nanjing Museum is a major state museum in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China, with extensive collections of archaeology and Chinese art. It is one of the largest museums in China and was established in the early 20th century.

Exhibition halls present archaeology, ceramics, painting and calligraphy, and other material culture spanning prehistoric times through imperial China and into the modern era. The museum’s display spaces are arranged across multiple exhibition halls and galleries.

The institution was founded in the Republican era and expanded during the 20th century into the large public museum complex seen today. Over decades it has grown its holdings through excavations, acquisitions and transfers from other institutions.

The museum sits at the southern edge of Purple Mountain in eastern Nanjing, close to the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum and other tombs and monuments on the mountain’s slopes.
