The Middle Atlas is a mountain range in northern Morocco forming the central portion of the Atlas system, characterised by forested slopes and plateaus. It is an important ecological zone in Morocco with extensive cedar woodlands.
The range contains highland towns with alpine-style architecture, forested parks and trails where visitors can see Atlas cedar stands and pockets of wildlife such as Barbary macaques. Recreational opportunities include hiking, nature viewing and short winter ski activities near local resorts.
Part of the larger Atlas mountain system, the Middle Atlas has long been inhabited by Berber communities and shaped by agricultural and pastoral land use. Its forests and mountain passes have been important for local transport and seasonal grazing.
The Middle Atlas sits in northern-central Morocco between the Rif in the north and the High Atlas to the south, stretching across provinces that include Ifrane and Azrou and lying to the south and west of the city of Fès.
- Best seasons: Winter snowfall is common at higher elevations and creates brief ski opportunities near towns such as Ifrane, while spring brings wildflowers and easier trekking conditions.

- Ifrane National Park: Ifrane National Park and surrounding cedar forests host trails, montane lakes and stands of Atlas cedar that support native wildlife.
- Azrou cedar forest: The Azrou cedar woodland is known for its large trees and for resident Barbary macaque populations that are commonly observed from marked paths.
How to Get to Middle Atlas #
Most visitors reach the Middle Atlas from Fès (about 80-120 km depending on destination). From Fès take the N8 south toward Ifrane (roughly 1.5-2 hours by car). Regional buses and grand taxis connect Ifrane, Azrou and smaller towns; renting a car gives access to higher passes and hidden valleys.
Tips for Visiting Middle Atlas #
- Hire a local guide from Ifrane or Azrou; Middle Atlas roads are mountainous and locals know unmarked cedar groves.
- Visit the cedar forests at dawn to see Barbary macaques; they are habituated to people but feeding them is illegal and stressful for the animals.
- Bring layered clothing - temperatures swing rapidly between sunlit valleys and forested ridges.

Visit in spring or autumn for the best hiking and milder weather; winter offers snow for a different, quieter version of the Middle Atlas.
