Mexico Visas for Digital Nomads

Every way to stay in Mexico as a remote worker: the visitor entry of up to 180 days, why officers now grant less, temporary and permanent residency, the consulate and INM process, and overstays.

Mexico has no digital nomad visa, but its visitor entry of up to 180 days and its temporary residency cover most remote workers. This page explains both as of October 2026. Requirements vary by consulate, so check with yours before applying.

Visitor Entry (FMM)#

Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK, EU countries, Australia, Japan and many others can enter Mexico without a visa as visitors.

  • Up to 180 days, at the immigration officer’s discretion.
  • Fewer days are common. Since 2022, officers often grant 30 to 90 days, matched to your return ticket and plans. Have an onward or return ticket, an address and some idea of your plans ready.
  • Digital at airports. Major airports now record your entry electronically; keep the receipt or stamp showing your permitted days.
  • No extensions. Visitor stays can’t be extended inside Mexico. To stay longer, leave and re-enter (at the officer’s discretion) or apply for residency.
  • Remote work. Mexican law doesn’t specifically address remote work for foreign employers on a visitor stay; it is widely done. Working for Mexican clients needs a work permit.

Temporary Residency#

Temporary residency (residencia temporal) is the main long-stay route.

  • Economic solvency: monthly income of about $4,400 after tax over the last six months, or average savings of about $74,000 over the last twelve months. The figures are set in Mexican minimum wages and differ between consulates.
  • Length: one year at first, then renewable for up to three more years. After four years you can apply for permanent residency.
  • Work: it allows remote work for foreign employers; working for Mexican companies needs extra permission.

How it works:

  1. Apply for a temporary resident visa at a Mexican consulate outside Mexico, with bank statements, passport and photos. Many consulates require an appointment, and some are much stricter than others.
  2. Enter Mexico with the visa within six months.
  3. Within 30 days, go to an INM (National Migration Institute) office to complete the process and receive your resident card.

Permanent Residency#

Permanent residency (residencia permanente) is available after four years of temporary residency, for retirees with higher income or savings, or through family ties. It doesn’t need renewing and allows work.

Overstays#

Overstaying a visitor stay brings fines when you leave, and can cause problems on future entries. Leave before your permitted days end.
